Communion contains a sequence titled “The Spalding Suite” which explores the aesthetic and cultural significance of basketball through the lens of my own personal experience. In 2014, Inua Ellams (with Benji Reid and Fuel Theatre) adopted the title of that sequence and some of the original poems contained therein as the basis for a physical theatre piece that delved into the hopes and dreams of a street-team of UK ballers. Along with 4 other writers (Nii Ayikwei Parkes, Roger Robinson, Bohdan Piasecki, and Nick Makoha) I was commissioned to produce new poems for the work that would ultimately feed into the script for the finished piece.

With a cast of six performers, and supported by DJ Eric Lau, the production toured to Liverpool, Ipswich, Birmingham, Stockton, Bournemouth, Brighton, Manchester and London.
